Mater Dei athletic director, Tia Meza, saw the importance of being proactive, taking control and doing things differently when it came to social media, particularly its impact on the school’s athletes, coaches and administrators. We conducted training workshops with administrators, coaches and student athletes of the majority of Mater Dei’s sports teams, and drafted the school’s first comprehensive social media guidelines for its athletic department.

At Mater Dei, we started to see the negative impact that social media was having on our students, specifically our student-athletes. It was at the center of most disciplinary issues, and we knew it was starting to take a toll on our students’ mental health. This led us to a partnership with Radiant and David Neiman. We are constantly looking for ways to educate and prepare our students and student athletes for the next level at Mater Dei. Our athletic programs are visible on a national level, and that brings added pressure to these young people as they learn to navigate this adult world. There are so many positive things that come with media attention, but we started to see the negative impact that social media was having on our students. We realized that it was our duty at Mater Dei to help our students learn how to be responsible digital citizens.
